It can be tempting to DIY (do it yourself), when it comes to fixing your plumbing around your home, however, you could be opening yourself up to more issues than you bargained for.

If you are not a NZ licensed plumber and you do your own sanitary plumbing, you can be endangering your family as well as your neighbours. You may also invalidate your house insurance and when you go to sell your place, if you have done any dodgy plumbing, it can result in legal action against you and/or your real estate agent if not disclosed.

What is sanitary plumbing?

Sanitary plumbing is anything involved in fixing or unfixing any pipe or plumbing fixture. This includes any trap, waste or soil pipe, ventilation pipe, or overflow pipe and any pipe that supplies or is intended to supply water. This is restricted plumbing work and only an authorised plumber can carry out the work.

Authorised plumbers play a critical role in the day-to-day health of our community NZ licensed plumbers protect our community by ensuring we have safe, clean water to drink, that is risk free of contamination, and by making sure our sewage waste is safely piped away without endangering our health.

All sanitary plumbing must comply with the Building Code

There are rules and regulations that NZ licensed plumbers must abide by when it comes to sanitary plumbing. It must comply with the building code and, where a building consent is required; the work must be checked by the building inspector from the building control authority in your area (your local council). A code of compliance certificate cannot be issued until the work has been signed off by the building inspector.

What you can do

Sanitary plumbing does not include the installation of appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines; the replacement or repair of taps, ball valves and plugs. For any other type of plumbing work you will need an authorised plumber.
