Solar water heating

Harness the sun’s free energy

Harnessing the sun’s energy to heat water is very practical and makes sense on so many levels. It’s free, always available and kind to the environment. And, best of all, a solar water heating system can help you cut your energy bills in half!

In Taranaki, we are blessed with a high number of sunshine hours each year, so it makes sense that members of our community are increasingly interested in utilising solar energy in their homes and businesses. Solar hot water heating isn’t a new thing – it has been used in and around New Plymouth for many years and continues to grow in popularity each year.

While there is a higher upfront cost associated with solar hot water systems, the running costs are much lower, making up for your initial investment in about seven years. For homeowners who know they’ll be staying put for a few years, a solar hot water system can be a great investment, providing savings of up to 50% on your power bill.

How solar hot water systems work

Solar hot water systems work by using energy from the sun to heat water. Some systems heat the water using solar panels, while others use specially constructed tubes to heat water. A backup booster element in the hot water cylinder is required to keep the water temperature at or above 60°C to avoid Legionella bacteria growing in your cylinder. This also ensures a steady flow of hot water on cloudy winter days.

Important note

Solar water heating is a great solution for many people, but it’s not right for everyone. The higher upfront cost may not work for your budget or your home may not be ideal for collecting sunlight. During the initial consultation, we’ll help you determine if solar hot water heating will work for you. If not, we can share other hot water heating options with you.

Commercial applications

Where large volumes of hot water are required, solar hot water systems can be combined with gas on-demand hot water systems as a booster or backup. Climate can provide you with a customised solution to suit your needs.

Solar hot water systems available at Climate

At Climate, we are committed to offering only the best and most effective products to our customers. When it comes to solar hot water, we believe that an evacuated tube solar hot water system provides the best results.

The most popular source of solar hot water worldwide, this system consists of a number of double-walled glass tubes with vacuum technology to efficiently insulate the absorber. This minimises heat loss to provide excellent performance all year round. Evacuated tubes have revolutionised the solar industry, making heating water with solar energy more than just a summer option.
